Broccoli evolved from a wild cabbage plant in Europe, and was introduced to the U.S. by Italian immigrants in the early 1900s. (Read more on Wikipedia.) 

Broccoli is an excellent source of vitamins C and K, and one of the best vegetable sources of calcium. It is also well known for containing many phytonutrients found to have anti-cancer properties. One such phytonutrient is called sulforaphane, which researchers have found can stop cells from turning cancerous.
