Muhammara (Turkish Red Pepper Spread)

  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2-3 large roasted red peppers, or any other sweet/mild peppers
  • 1/2 cup fresh breadcrumbs
  • 1 large clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice, or to taste
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper
  • salt 


Toast walnuts in small dry skillet over medium heat, stirring until fragrant (2 to 3 minutes). Transfer to small bowl and let cool. Combine all ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth. Adjust seasoning with more lemon juice and salt, if desired. Serve with toasted pita or crackers or raw vegetable sticks like carrots and celery.
