Grapefruit

The grapefruit is a subtropical citrus fruit that was first discovered in Barbados. It is a naturally occuring hybrid between the Jamaican sweet orange and the Indonesian pomelo. The skin is a yellow-orange color and the pulp can be either red, pink, or white. The flavor ranges from highly acidic and bitter to sweet and tart. (Read more on Wikipedia.)

Grapefruit is an excellent source of vitamin C, which helps to support the immune system, reduce cold symptoms and prevent free radical damage. Research also shows that consuming a diet high in vitamin C is associated with reduced rates of heart disease, stroke, and cancer! (Read more on World's Healthiest Foods.)

Grapefruit can be stored at room temperature if they are to be used within three to five days. They are juiciest when warm rather than chilled. For longer storage, they should be stored in the refrigerator crisper.
